Public workers, brace yourselves. Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) general secretary Senator Toni Moore is warning that Government’s mass retrenchment exercise could last into 2019.

She discussed this likely possibility on Monday during a Press conference at Solidarity House as she also revealed 75 Barbados Water Authority (BWA) workers would be going home by Thursday as a part of the statutory corporation’s first phase of retrenchments. The BWA staff complement stands at 750.

“It’s very safe to say that the restructuring programme will not finish before Christmas or immediately after,” Moore said. “But it is as the information comes to us and as we are able to treat to it.”

In recent weeks, hundreds of workers from state-owned enterprises (SOEs) such as the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation, Rural Development Commission, Transport Board and, most recently, the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, have been sent home. (AD)
