Stigma worry

PUNITIVE LEGISLATION, homophobia and stigma are making the HIV/AIDS epidemic worse, says Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.

And he has urged countries to defend the rights of sex workers and drug users and to educate adolescents about their sexuality.

The UN Secretary General was speaking at yesterday’s Caribbean launch of the UNAIDS Lancet Commission’s: Defeating AIDS – Advancing Global Health Report at the Hilton Hotel.

“Homophobia threatens both human rights and public health,” Ban told his audience, which included Senator Carol Lady Haynes, Dr Timothy Roach, Sir George Alleyne and director of the National HIV/AIDS Commission, Jacqui Wiltshire, as well as members of the clergy and the HIV/AIDS Commission. (HLE)
