THE EUROPEAN UNION’S (EU) representative in Barbados is “disturbed” that the majority of Barbadians still favour beating children as a way of discipline.
At the same time, the head of the EU Delegration to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean expressed concern that to date no one had been arrested or charged in relation to the suspicious deaths of Shemar Weekes, 14, Leila Lewis, three, and Jahan King, six, in separate incidents this year.
Speaking with the media during a luncheon meeting at Champers Restaurant in Rockley, Christ Church, on Tuesday, Ambassador Mikael Barfod warned of evidence linking the beating of children to other forms of violence in the society.
While applauding Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite for signalling his intention to remove corporal punishment from the Juvenile Offenders Act, Barford described as “perplexing” the “comments from Minister of Education Ronald Jones who could not say whether his ministry would be supporting the Attorney General”.
