HELPING AT-RISK YOUTH adopt better behavioural practices consumes her mind. In fact, social worker Franz Harewood-Hamblin eats, sleeps and breathes Empower Youth International (EYI), a charity she leads that helps vulnerable young boys and girls aged five to 17.

In 2012, Harewood-Hamblin, director of EYI, took her missionary work a step further by setting up a charity at home.

After graduating from the University of the West Indies with a degree in social work, she found it difficult to find work in her field.

“I was doing a lot of thinking about applying to places and I found that the opportunities were limited in my field. I just felt this strong desire, you could say it was like the Holy Spirit told me with the rise of youth crime in Barbados and the incidence of youth violence that I should really do something about it,” she said.
