LAW-BREAKING GARBAGE HAULERS are being blamed for the underperformance of the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre (SBRC).
Contractor for the centre Dr Ralph “Bizzy” Williams said instead of receiving about 1 000 tons of garbage a day, the company was only collecting an average of 300 tons.
To avoid paying the controversial $25 tipping fee that was imposed on waste-haulers, Williams said they were breaking the law.
“A number of these haulers, I’m not going to call any names, have decided that they are not going to pay the tipping fee. They will charge the customer sure enough, but they will take the garbage and do whatever they feel like doing with it.” He spoke at the Pinnacle Safety Solutions Health and Safety Expo held at the Accra Beach Hotel Hastings.
Williams added this behaviour was worrying and the dumpers did not seem to care about the environment.
SBRC, located at Vaucluse, St Thomas, came about through a partnership with the Government of Barbados to process some of the waste previously taken to the Mangrove Landfill. It commenced operations in June 2009. (TSG)
