YET AGAIN, Barbados’ court system has come under harsh criticism from the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
In overturning the decision of Barbados’ Court of Appeal [which] refused to allow the appeals of four drug convicts on the grounds that their applications were out of time, the CCJ expressed serious disappointment with the delay of justice and urged that steps be taken to remedy the situation.
The CCJ’s comments came in the appeal matter of drug convicts Rohan Rambarran, Lemme Campbell, Gavin Green and Somwattie Persaud, who were each sentenced to lengthy prison terms on December 11, 2009, for cocaine possession and trafficking.
Noting that two of the defendants would complete their prison terms by next month, the court referred to the matter as “another example of the inordinate systematic delay of the Barbados judiciary”.
