Bridgetown lost one of its pioneering Indian businessmen last week, with the passing of Radhakishin Thani.
Thani, who was retired, died at age 88 after a short illness, and his body was cremated at the Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens last Thursday.
His son Dr Suresh Thani told the WEEKEND Nation his father migrated from Bombay after World War II, first going to Japan, then New York, before eventually making his way to Barbados. He was one of four brothers who were among early Indian migrants to Barbados.
He arrived here by boat at age 25, and initially found work in the retail business operated by his brother Dayaldas Thani.
Radhkishin Thani later established his own business and went on to set up others around Bridgetown, including the former Tots and Teens store on Broad Street, Thani Brothers on Bridge Street, stores on Swan Street, and built the Pandora’s Shopping Centre on Bay Street.
Though he retired about 15 years ago, Thani continued to maintain an interest in those businesses with which he had been associated. (GC)
