Luck doesn’t ride with Matthews

IT REALLY IS BETTER to be lucky than good.

Just ask Darren Matthews.

Misfortune struck at the worst possible time yesterday, as a mechanical failure on the penultimate lap robbed Barbados’ national champ of a certain medal at the Caribbean Elite Cycling Championships’ road race on the Stewart’s Hill, St John course.

The day was simply one of heartbreak for the home team, with seasoned triathlete Dominique Marshall also missing out on a bronze by the smallest of margins after suffering from cramp in a sprint finish for third place.

But the occasion was supposed to belong to Matthews, who eventually had to settle for fifth place when his bicycle chain inexplicably came off and ended up behind the derailleur.
