LOCAL POLICE investigators are reaching into cyberspace but are finding it difficult to take a byte out of some of the alleged crimes being committed.
Amid complaints from Barbadians that they have been criminally defamed online, police have maintained it is virtually impossible to pursue the cases if the websites and alleged slanderers are based abroad.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Charles Leacock admitted as much during an interview with the SUNDAY SUN.
“Most of those websites don’t emanate in Barbados as far as I know,” he said. “They are all either on a Facebook page or Myspace or one of those. We have had mutual legal (inter-governmental) assistance requests for them; for Facebook things that were patently illegal, close to criminal libel, those kinds of things.”
