The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is heading to Trinidad for the first time in 28 years – with the help of some Barbadian connections.

Unfancied Dorsett, a six-year-old bay horse owned by Trinidadians Steve and Allan Madoo and ridden by Barbadian jockey Jalon Samuel, won the 35th running of the southern Caribbean’s most prestigious race in style at the Garrison Savannah yesterday.

A winner in three of his previous 25 starts, Dorsett was expertly ridden by Samuel in the closing stages to beat out pre-race favourites Watchyourownbobber with Patrick Husbands up, and War Envoy and Mario Pino.

It was the first time that a Trinidadian owner lifted the Gold Cup since 1988 when Call To Account, owned by Roland Khan and ridden by Emile Ramsammy, won the event.
