Anglican baptisms down

BAPTISMS are down in the Anglican Church, with one church reporting an almost 50 per cent drop in the number of infants being brought to its baptismal font.

This has been revealed by Rural Dean for St John’s Deanery and rector of the St George’s Parish Church, Reverend John Rogers.

He was speaking in the wake of performing six baptisms at Sunday’s Easter Service at the historic 1784 consecrated church.

The service also saw children parading their Easter bonnets before the 9:15 a.m. service.

Rogers admitted that baptisms in his church had decreased.

“If we look 15/20 years, there has been a drastic fall-off in baptisms because 15/20 years ago, St George would do something close to 100 baptisms a year. We’re down to about 40-something now,” he said. (HLH)
