THE NEW OWNER of the Barbados Tridents, who is wanted in India for alleged debts of over US$1 billion, is getting nothing but praise from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Vijay Mallya (below) faces an arrest warrant in his native country and his diplomatic passport has also been revoked, but CPL chief executive officer Damien O’Donohoe said the business tycoon was the “right buyer” for the Barbados franchise and described the relationship between the two parties as “first-class”.
Speaking to WEEKENDSPORT from Ireland, O’Donohoe also said that the CPL carried out the necessary due diligence before partnering with Mallya, who purchased Barbados Tridents earlier this year in the build-up to the fourth edition of the glitzy Twenty20 tournament starting on June 29.
“We take very seriously with whom we partner with and when we looked at options of selling the franchises in Year 1 and Year 2, we chose not to because we wanted to find the right buyers,” O’Donohoe said. (HG)
