Music judge Springer passes on

WELL-KNOWN MUSICIAN and calypso judge Kean Springer has died.

The 79-year-old Guyanese-born Springer will be remembered as a literary and music critic, calypso commentator and judge of NIFCA competitions.

Her son, Bevan, told the DAILY NATION she passed away in the United States after receiving care and treatment for a brief illness there.

In a distinguished career, Springer was a lecturer in English at both the University of the West Indies (UWI) and Barbados Community College, and was a director of UWI’s Cavite Choralein the early 1970s.

She also served as director of administrative services of Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA Barbados) and was honoured by that organisation for her tremendous contribution to CGA Canada’s international operations during her 20 years of service.

As a musician she tutored students at her Christ Church home and also played on the local hotel circuit for several years,

The niece-in-law of Barbados’ third native Governor General and National Hero, Sir Hugh Springer, she brought rare insight into this public figure through the published biography Truly A Gentleman: The Right Excellent Sir Hugh Worrell Springer.

She was married to Dr Basil Springer, was the mother of Karen, Kevin and Bevan, and grandmother of Maia, Joshua, Anya, Mariam and Hana. (GC)
