ESPERANZA captured the top honours in the J24 class in the inaugural Old Brigand Rum Regatta recently.
Sailing in perfect weather conditions, Ian Mayers and his team on board Esperanza, narrowly edged out Robert Povey and crew sailing Hawkeye.
The experienced Charlie Gloumeau sailed Bunga Bunga to a respectable third place.
In the CSA class, veteran sailor Ralph Johnson had to use his wealth of experience to maintain momentum after his yacht Rapajam suffered severe damage to its mainsail in the second race.
Brilliant crew work in the remaining races saw Rapajam edging out Ian Hicklin’s Ten Seven to take first place overall.
Third position went to Dragon Magic with captain Mike Krimholtz at the helm.
Waymar, sailed by “Captain Ron” Hunt got the better of the six other boats in the non-CSA class, finishing ahead of Peter Hoad’s Paddington, while Sail La Vie (the former Bruggadung), which was designed and built by the late Andrew Burke, sailed into third place, captained by former GP14 world champion Bill Tempro.
