FIRE OFFICERS can breathe a sigh of relief after spending days trying to extinguish smoking debris in a Porters, St James gully.

The deep pit located behind the Doorless Bar was said to be filled with all types of garbage, ranging from household refuse to old tree stumps and grass.

Station Officer of the Probyn Street headquarters, Gordon Boxill, told the DAILY NATION the exercise of smothering the fire was a collaborative one involving different ministries because of the depth of the gully and the high level of flammability.  The departments were the Soil Conservation Unit and Ministry of Transport and Works.

He also warned against indiscriminate dumping especially since it had the potential to escalate. (MR)
