CARIBBEAN countries must create opportunities for their citizens to contribute to nation-building as a counter to the brain drain.
In this way, countries can derive rich benefits from their foreign-based nationals’ expertise.
The advice has been given by Trinidadian-born president of Howard University, Dr Wayne Frederick, who sees this approach as “the biggest solution” to the region’s loss of its academics working in other parts of the world.
During a lecture on American higher education at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Wednesday, Frederick said: “I think you have to get engagement on every level and if we do that collectively, I see no reason why these countries can’t be leaders in just about every single field because you have nationals who are leading in fields all over the world.”
