ENOUGH WITH THE GOWNS AND WIGS.
The Barbados Bar Association has passed a motion that will soon be forwarded to Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson for his consideration to allow lawyers to change their mode of dress.
For centuries, lawyers plying their trade, first along Coleridge Street, and now at White Park Road, have worn traditional English black gowns and wigs, but the Bar Association wants that to change.
The motion was passed at the bar’s annual general meeting last month, and read: “Noting that Barbados is currently celebrating its 50th year of Independence, and cognisant that we are living in a tropical zone that is getting warmer due to climate change, we call upon the Chief Justice to allow attorneys at law the option of wearing a ‘shirt jac’ to court in place of a jacket and or tie. This shall apply to both male and female attorneys at law.” (BA)
