Sir Garry: Coaching papers overrated

CRICKET’S SUPREME all-rounder has thrown cold water on the idea that holding a coaching certificate qualifies someone to coach.

Rather, National Hero Rt Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers argues that many of the people holding cricket coaching certificates “know very little about the game”.

Just as he had resisted the idea of acquiring a coaching certificate when he was coaching in schools and working with aspiring coaches throughout Australia, Sir Garry said he refused to submit himself to the requirement here.

He said this was the reason why many young Barbadian players have not been able to benefit from his expertise. (GC)
