WHILE GOVERNMENT FIDDLES, the judicial system is crumbling, an Opposition Senator charged yesterday in the Senate as he called on Government to act on recommendations made since 2007 to fix the mountain of delayed cases clogging the system.

Senator Wilfred Abrahams blasted the lack of action, citing the failure to appoint a Chief Magistrate and move on several proposals of a special team of eminent legal professionals.

In his presentation in the Upper Chamber yesterday during debate on measures to abolish preliminary hearings, Abrahams said: “Never before in the history of our country before Independence and since Independence have this many people got together to discuss the criminal justice system and sat down and made recommendations . . . . there are some [recommendations] that are easy and some require legislative amendments.

“The Magistrates Courts (Amendment) Bill 2016 was eventually passed as others joined in lamenting but also making suggestions for the often criticised judicial system . . .” (GE/GC)
