WEST COAST beaches are in danger of becoming mere sea and rocks.

That was the concern expressed by surf instructor Sam Inniss, who said the erection of man-made structures near the coastline continues to cause beach erosion.

He said he believed that the recent destruction on Paynes Bay was linked to Treasure Beach Hotel’s guard wall, which he said was extended onto the beach twice within the last four years.

The management of the hotel, however, denied any responsibility for the erosion.

“In the last six years I’ve been here, we’ve seen a decline in sand. [But] the hotel is not to blame for the erosion. The wall has been there for 30 years. In 2011 there were two major cracks in the wall and we rebuilt the wall on the same footing. We never went out; all we did was build the existing wall upon the old cracked wall.
