ISLANDS IN THE Eastern Caribbean are bracing for the impact of a tropical wave later today.
According to the National Hurricane Centre, at 8 a.m., the wave was located about 700 miles east of the Lesser Antilles over the Atlantic Ocean, moving westward at 25 to 30 miles per hour.
Since the system is moving quite rapidly, further development is unikely, but there is associated shower activity.
The Windward Island, Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have been advised to prepare for showers and gusty winds.
The Meteorological Office in Dominca has issued an advisory. Current projected rainfall is is approximately 70mm, with higher amounts are likely in elevated areas. As a result, persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are therefore being advised to be vigilant and exercise caution, particularly from late Saturday into Sunday.
The disturbance is expected to be in the western Caribbean Sea by the middle of next week, where conditions could become more conducive or development.
Meanwhile, there is a second tropical wave a couple of hundred miles southwest of Cabo Verde. This has become less organised during the past 24 hours, but there is still a chance of development. (PR)
