CRICKET LEGEND Sir Garfield Sobers was showered with accolades at a privately organised 80th birthday reception at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre last week.
It was an evening when friends, admirers and cricketers from around the globe gushed about the man widely regarded as the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen.
Special tributes were paid by Sir Garry’s former teammates Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Wes Hall, Cammie Smith and Rawle Brancker who graced the icons table. The fellow cricket legends spoke about “a great man without a trace of egotism in his bones but with a tremendous dose of humility”.
“His ability as a sportsman almost measured up to his ability as a human being,” Sir Everton Weekes said of his friend and he praised Sir Garry for passing on some of that ability to young players coming after him. (GC)
