Leroy Harper passes

MEMBERS OF THE ATHLETICS fraternity are today mourning the loss of one of their own.

Leroy Harper, who gave yeoman service for more than a decade in photo finish and meet management, passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital yesterday.

Harper was a former teacher at St Leonard’s Girls’ School and Ellerslie Secondary and also worked in the hotel sector at Treasure Beach. He attended Harrison College and had a deep love for chess.

But for many years, Harper was a staple figure under the photo finish tent at the National Stadium, working with the Athletics Association of Barbados. He also gave of his time at the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships and was instrumental in the early years of the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships.

He leaves to mourn wife Faith, two sons, a daughter and a stepson.

Tributes poured in for Harper on social media site Facebook as the news spread yesterday. (SAT)
