THERE HAVE BEEN 554 strokes and 403 heart attacks recorded for the first six months of the year in Barbados.

And the patients are becoming younger and an increasing number are women.

With an average of just under 100 strokes and just over 67 heart attacks per month, the statistics are worrying the advocacy/support group, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados, which is ramping up its educational programmes and even targeting overweight children.

Chief executive officer of the charity, Gina Pitts, revealed the numbers for the first half of this year were higher than the corresponding figures for last year.

She projected that the disturbing trend will continue when the figures for the entire year were compared to those of 2015.
