AS GHASTLY AS it sounds, one of Barbados’ newest criminal trends is occurring in the graveyards.
At least four cemeteries have confirmed the frequent theft of wreaths from grave sites.
Michael Hoyte, funeral officer at Bushy Park Cemetery in St Philip, said the theft of wreaths under the cover of darkness was now part of an organised scam where the floral arrangements from the graves at cemeteries were being resold to other funeral-goers.
A regular wreath could cost a minimum of $50.
“Up to yesterday, flowers were stolen from a person’s grave because we got complaints. Every time we have funerals, the flowers are taken. Even though the families complain, it really is not going to stop this,” he said. (MR)
