Pageant sparks debate . . . again

THE ISSUE of race relations has again come into focus following the crowning of the new Miss Universe Barbados.

Upon the announcement that 21-year-old Shannon Harris was crowned queen, some people took to social media to announce their displeasure at the title going to a girl who looked Caucasian, saying they thought her colour was the reason she won.

Harris is of mixed heritage and is a Barbadian having attended St Angela’s School and Harrison College. She had previously been involved in other pageants.

“I am a Bajan; I have lived here all my life and I am happy to be Bajan,” she said in response, adding her entire family was Barbadian and said she had not expected the negative post-show reaction.” (CA)
