Deluge expected

AS BARBADOS LOCKED DOWN and residents braced for the effects of a tropical system – their first taste of the hurricane season – the head meteorologist warned that a significant amount of rain could fall in just a few hours.

Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services, Hampden Lovell, told the MIDWEEK NATION that similarly to how rains from Tropical Storm Erika devastated Dominica last year, the approaching system had the potential to cause significant damage here.

The system, which up to press time had not been upgraded to a tropical storm, was expected to hit late last night or early this morning.

“Just like what Tropical Storm Erika did to Dominica, we have to be very aware of the precipitation that comes with that system. That is more of a bother than the winds, because the winds for Barbados will be more in the northern section,” he explained. (RB)
