A RETIRED DEPUTY PRINCIPAL of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus has called for a new funding model to assist distressed Barbadians wanting to pursue education at the UWI.

While he praised the Student Revolving Loan Fund and assistance offered by the UWI, Professor Pedro Welch said some students were still falling through the cracks.

He cautioned that the 2014 reintroduction of tuition fees for Barbadians studying at the university poses a serious challenge to the country’s human resource development.

During a lecture Thursday night hosted by the university as part of its ongoing Independence series, the professor said the Government should consider issuing bonds as well as passing legislation to facilitate private sector involvement in student loans. (WILLCOMM)
