THE CURTAIN has come down on the prelims and 16 schools will now be competing to see who advances to the quarter-finals of the Cave Shepherd/Berger Royale/A1 Supermarkets Primary Schools Road Tennis Competition.

The final two schools to book spots were West Terrace Primary and Bay Primary after a hard-fought battle at the Rubis Courts, Brighton, yesterday.

But the Carlton Supermarket Zone title was not an easy one to grab as Selah Primary refused to throw in the towel, resulting in three schools all recording two wins and one loss each.

Technique

Captain Azahari Callowary spearheaded West Terrace’s success. He displayed exceptional technique and grim determination that earned his school enough points to pull away from the rest.

Calloway defeated Reshawn Maynard-Eastmond of St Silas 21-18 and Michael Brown of Bay Primary 22-20.

Siblings Solange and Jahzara Holford, daughters of sportsman Ryan Holford, also turned up for West Terrace and unleashed some girl power on court.

Solange, the younger of the two and the 8 to 11 queen of the Barbados Public Workers’ Cooperative Credit Union’s Monarchs of the Court Road Tennis Tournament, thrashed Raquon Browne of St Silas 21-7, while Jahzara beat Traquon Sealy of Bay Primary’ 21-14.

Defeats

West Terrace’s Kebra Bruce and Jonathan Harmon defeated Dimitri Philips of St Silas and Adrianno Gamble of Bay Primary 21-14 and 21-13, respectively.

Bay Primary inflicted 2-1 defeats on both St Silas and Selah Primary.

Michael Brown defeated Reshawn Maynard-Eastmond of St Silas 21-19, while Adrianno Gamble won against St Silas’ Dineco Henry 21-5.

However, Demitri Phillips of St Silas snatched the final game when he defeated Traquon Sealy of Bay Primary 21-13.

Brown defeated Nazario Scantlebury of Selah Primary 21-19 and Adrianno Gamble defeated Najaire Broome 21-16 but Rahiem Pierre lost to Ramero Samuels of Selah 17-21.

Selah defeated both West Terrace and St Silas 2-1.

The battle for a quarter-final place will begin Wednesday at KFC Warrens, while the individual competion finals will take place next Friday. (RG)
