BARBADOS Netball Association knockout queens Pine Hill St Barnabas rebounded from their one goal loss to UWI Blackbirds by hammering Pride of Guardian Villa 43-22 when league action continued on Wednesday night at the Netball Stadium.
A game high 39 goals from 49 attempts saw national six-footer Laurel Browne lead St Barnabas to a one and one Division One record. They held quarter advantages of 16-6, 24-11 and 33-16. Low percentage efforts from alternating goal attacks Sheniqua Thomas (3-8) and Vanessa Bobb (1-9) did not alter the results as Villa offered little scoring resistance.
In Villa’s opening game they pushed league champions C.O. Williams Rangers to the wire, thanks to the shooting of Faye Sealy. With Sealy absent from Wednesday night’s game, Villa’s offence was carried by Kimberley Maynard, who scored 14 goals from 29 attempts at goal shoot.
However, Nadia Blackman and Kellyann Knight made little impact alternating at goal attack with Blackman, scoring just four from 13 and Knight making four of her seven attempts.
Villa lost the plot in mid court in spite of some robust play from Makeba Clarke, Kamillah Burke and Shanise Jarvis. The strong play by Barbados captain Latonia Blackman at goal keeper helped somewhat in keeping the gap from widening even more.
St Barnabas’ less than urgent play, particularly after their great start, allowed Villa to escape a more brutal whipping. While Browne was accurate at one end with goal keeper Shonette Bruce being efficient at the other, Jeneice Clarke, Samantha Browne, Markayla Yearwood and Cherise Seale used the game to warm up for worthier opponents.
Tonight, Rangers will meet such an opponent when they face the Blackbirds at seven o’clock at the Stadium.
