THE BALL IS NOW in the court of the management of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) in its pay dispute with workers.

Following a meeting of GAIA and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) yesterday afternoon, the union’s general secretary Roslyn Smith told the WEEKEND NATION the union was now awaiting a reply from management.

Smith, who described yesterday’s two-hour meeting as “cordial” said the NUPW had put forward a proposal and was now awaiting a response from the airport’s management.

She said that response was expected to be forthcoming today.

“During today’s meeting the NUPW put forward a proposal and management has told us they will get back to us tomorrow. It was a good discussion and all I can say at this time is that we are awaiting a response from management,” Smith said.

The union and airport management have been at loggerheads over the refusal of the GAIA to pay workers a 16 per cent cut of its profits.

On four successive days last week, unionised workers staged industrial action, first through a sickout and then through a picket in the airport’s car park. (RB)
