MINISTER OF HEALTH John Boyce has been criticised for not urgently responding to the South Coast sewage problem.

Attorney at law Ralph Thorne, QC, who is the Barbados Labour Party’s  (BLP) candidate for the affected Christ Church South district, has advised businesses and residents to seek legal recourse.

“In a corridor shared by residents and by commerce, we must call on the parliamentary representative who is also the Minister of Health to respond to this health crisis with urgency. The government needs to be aware that the situation is harmful to the physical health of locals and tourists who are reporting that waste has also been seen in the sea as well,” Thorne told the SATURDAY SUN yesterday.

His comments followed reports of sewage which had spilled from a leaking well into the streets and nearby Graeme Hall swamp, the cause suspected to be Tuesday’s heavy rains.

Thorne said the situation also adversely affected the viability of businesses and devalued their properties.

“What is most distressing is that this situation has persisted with the ongoing silence of the parliamentary representative, and several of the residents and business people may now feel that they have no representative voice within government for the alleviation of this public health hazard,” Thorne said.
