THE CARIBBEAN DEVELOPMENT Boxing Tournament was declared open by Minister of Sport Stephen Lashley on Tuesday night at the Sea Rocks Dome, Barbados Beach Club, Maxwell, Christ Church.

The tournament, which forms part of the 50th anniversary games of the Barbados Olympic Association, runs until Saturday, with 18 countries including Barbados vying for the title.

“This high level of participation by regional competitors is not only testimony of the quality of this event, but also of the high regard with which you hold Barbados. But more importantly, it speaks to your commitment to the development of the sport,” Lashley said.

Boxing is a unique sport, he said in addition to undergoing immense mental and physical conditioning, boxers are expected to possess a high level of discipline. (RA)
