HOODEES HARLINGTON hung on by the proverbial “tips of their fingernails” to dethrone defending champions Fire Service in a desperate finish to the final of the fifth Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) T20 Cricket Tournament at Rices, St Philip, early yesterday morning.
It was well after midnight when veteran fast bowler Godwin Flatts bowled the final delivery with Fire Service requiring four runs to repeat as champions in the popular annual competition.
But the ninth-wicket pair of Jerad Bernadin and wicketkeeper Ron Phillips could only scramble a couple, to set off jubilant celebrations among the partisan St Philip crowd who were earlier made to wait for almost an hour and a half for the start of the rescheduled finale.
The Ulric Batson-led Harlington won the toss and overcame difficult batting conditions to post a modest 121 for six before holding the “firemen” to 120 for eight to prevail by one run and take the $3 000 winners’ prize. (WH)
