HISTORIAN SIR HILARY BECKLES has cast doubt on the seriousness of the Barbados Government to transition the country to a republic.
As he launched his latest book Thursday night, the vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies, said the administration had not even agreed to remove a relic of its colonial past, the controversial Lord Nelson statue, from Bridgetown.
He said the inaction showed that Barbados could be one of the last states in the Caribbean to remove the Queen as the head of state.
“My expectation is that Barbados will probably become the last country in this region to become a republic. I cannot see it,” said Sir Hilary, at the launch at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination. (WILLCOMM)
