HUNDREDS OF TAXI OWNERS are being called to an urgent meeting today and high on the agenda are a fare increase and the state of taxi stands.

Operators will also hear from attorney Lateisha Bourne when the meeting gets under way at the headquarters of the National Union of Public Workers at 6 p.m.

Roy Raphael, president of the 75-member Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT), which is organising the gathering, said the taxi operators would get a chance to speak on the matters particularly since the last fare increase was in 2007.

According to current rates, passengers have to pay $50 from the airport to Bridgetown, and $70 from The City to Speightstown. From anywhere in Bridgetown to the port is $10. (AC)
