THE COLD CASE squad of police detectives set up in 2007 to review unsolved murders has been disbanded, having solved a few cases, the SUNDAY SUN has been told.

The seven-member team looked into killings dating back to the 1970s and 1980s, such as the chilling cane field murders and the infamous shooting death of Victor “Pele” Parris, as well as cases of the 1990s and early 2000s, including the brutal deaths of teenager Gillian Bayne and Lorraine Harding.

Police sources say the squad was successful in clearing up the seven-year-old murder mystery of elderly Floretta Highland, whose body was found on April 8, 2003, in her Mayport Lane, Pinelands, St Michael home with her throat slashed. A 45-year-old man was charged in 2010 with her death.

The officers also got to the bottom of the 2004 gun murder of Kelly Bailey, formerly of Kirtons, St Philip. They discovered that all of the men believed to have been involved in the murder had themselves died during a shoot-out
with police. (MB)
