Oba: Athletes deserve better

Take sports and the state of the roofless National Stadium more seriously. Barbados’ lone Olympic Games individual medallist Obadele Thompson is pleading with Government and sports administrators to find the resources to get first-rate facilities for the country’s athletes.

“It is unfortunate that the National Stadium is in that condition. I am aware that repairing or even getting a new Stadium is a significant investment. I don’t know if things can be salvaged but something has to be done soon,” Thompson told THE NATION in a wide-ranging interview last Saturday.

“But when you look at what sports means to so many people and how many young people are involved in sports, I think it is more an investment in the young people, who for the most part are 30 and under, to show them we believe in you and that we are committed to helping you as far as possible,” Thompson noted.

He made the remarks after he was honoured by his alma mater, Harrison College, by the naming of the school’s sports facility the Obadele Thompson Sports Complex. (EZS)
