MAVIS BECKLES: Evahthing gone topsy-turvy

I ALWAYS USED tuh say, when ya miss anybody from ’bout here fuh a li’l while, ya does find dem up in the States. But I gine tell ya, despite how hard it is and how complex Barbados seem tuh be getting nowadays, I would rather be here wid the little I got, than tuh be up there in the United States of America wid all o’ dah confusion and uncertainty.

Look, I know right now duh got a lot o’ people, Bajans included, who went up tuh the States evah long time sense tuh see if duh could make a better life fuh duhselves and duh families and never got duh papers sorted out fuh one reason or the other. Duh working and making a honest dollar up there but a lot o’ dem still ain’t legal. All like now so I could imagine dat a good few o’ dem feel like how the poor Guyanese did feel in Barbados a few years back, when the immigration people or police use tuh pick dem up all hours o’ the night and ship dem ’long back tuh Guyana just so.

I would hate tuh be in dem shoes right now but I gine tell ya, it ain’t look like dah man Donald Trump ain’t mekking nuh sport at all; it look tuh me dat if he had he way, instead o’ trying tuh understand the running o’ the country as well as world affairs and how it effects dat country, he would be spending the first year as president o’ the United States raking up people and sending dem ’long back where duh come from. The man like he telling heself that if ya ain’t born in the United States, ya ain’t have nuh right in there. Well, I tell ya.

I read an article there the other day dat say how the Trump administration plan tuh consider almost all illegal immigrants subject tuh deportation, but he will leave protections in place fuh immigrants known as dreamers. These are people who entered the country illegally as children.

I could remember when Obama issued an order dat protected thousands o’ immigrants who was brought in tuh the United States illegally by duh parents. But Trump ain’t like dat too good; it like it ain’t gine down too good wid he.

I ain’t know how duh gine deal wid all o’ this but as far as I could see, it ain’t as easy as it looks ‘cause duh got a lot o’ people who went up tuh the States, get married and now got families and extended families. Some probably never thought it necessary tuh get duh papers sorted out. So now, wha’ gine happen tuh dem? Duh gine send back the parent who ain’t legal and leh the children and the other parent stand? Or send back both the parents and leave the children tuh fend fuh demselves?

Another thing is, I ain’t know where all o’ these people gine go. I cahn talk fuh other countries but tuh send back people who committed crimes in the States, who was up there from the time duh was li’l children and doan know one iota ’bout Barbados, I ain’t know where duh put dem. Wid all the lot o’ stress duh got ’bout here, I ain’t know – dat is another set o’ headaches fuh this country.
