Josiah does it again

NATIONAL triathlete Oein Josiah retained his title in the Coverley 5K, held this year in aid if the Precious Touch Foundation, at The Villages at Coverley, Christ Church.

The 27-year-old 213 other runners and walkers who braved early morning showers to raise funds to grant the wishes of sick children across the island.

Describing the race as good, the two-time winner said that the technical course had a great atmosphere which assisted him in achieving his race target.

“My multisport coach Mijail Santos and I discussed the race target and we were able to achieve it, so I am very satisfied,” he said.

“I have been participating in this event since its inception four years ago. I finished second in 2014 and 2015, and finished first last year.”

Josiah set a new record of 16:33:31, eclipsing the previous mark of 17:09:00 set by Jerome Blackett in 2014.

Blackett finished a minute behind Josiah to take second position in 17:32.4 minutes, while Shamel Maynard finished third in 17:36.2 minutes.

The winner among the women was 48-year-old Dominique Marshall in 22:21.0 minutes. Second place went to Amy Cox in 22:41.1 minutes, and 56-year-old June Knight ended her leg in 23:35.6 minutes.

The children too had their day in the spotlight. In the Under-12 category, nine-year-old Josie Maloney finished first for the girls in 30:20.5 minutes, while ten-year-old Tytan Hinkson was the first boy home in 21:51.6 minutes.

There was also a category for the seniors in the Under-50 category and Leith Daley crossed the line first in 27:24.4 minutes. Lester Phillips won the men’s side of the race in 18:59.8 minutes. (RA)
