Former monarchs Deacons captured their 17th Cooperators General Insurance Volleyball Knockout title, while Brydens Rockets got rid of the bridesmaids’ tag and captured their third in the finals Sunday night at the Wildey Gym.
In both cases, it was Chargers who came away winless.
Led by the quick and aggressive offence of middles Jamaal Nedd and rookie Klode Thompson, Deacons fought back from a set down to take the game 19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 26-28, 15-13.
The Rockets won their third successive attempt in a finals against Chargers 25-9, 10-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13, denying them their 13th title with professional players Shari Matthews and Anicia Wood pointing the way.
Solid plays from the talented Kyle Brown, Sheldon Roach and Daran Gill were extracted by setter Ronald Rice who moved over from Progressive this season. Libero Victor Griffith, who started his career at Chargers, showed his experience and formerly underused skills to give Deacons the winning edge.
