GOOD HANDWRITING SKILLS are being encouraged through the 5th Primary School Handwriting Competition, sponsored by the Isaiah 55 Centre for Spiritual & Developmental Training.

The competition, which is being held in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, is open to children in three age categories, namely six to seven, eight to nine and 10 to 11 years.

Students must provide a sample of their best handwriting style, using only the handwriting text provided to their primary school by the sponsor.

Children aged six to seven must write on the text: As I Was Going to St Ives. For category eight to nine, students must write on The Swing by Robert Louis Stevenson, while those aged 10 to 11 must write on The Moon, also by Stevenson.

Competitors should pay close attention to rewriting the text in its entirety as they could be disqualified. They must also write with HB pencils and provide handwriting that is both legible and neat. No markers are allowed.

Entries must be submitted on foolscap paper 8.5 by 11 inches only and margins should be one (1) inch on all sides of the paper.  This must then be attached to the application form, also available at schools.

Schools are required to submit no more than two entries per category. These must be submitted by Friday, June 9, in a sealed envelope marked: Handwriting Competition to: “Isaiah 55 Centre For Spiritual & Developmental Training, “Georgia”, Mansion Road, Bank Hall, St Michael. Attention: Mrs Cassandra Bowen.

The competition will be judged on flow, consistency, legibility, individuality, layout, neatness, style and flair of handwriting.

Prizes including fine writing instruments, trophies and vouchers will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners for excellence in penmanship in each age category. (BGIS)
