SOCIAL SCENE: Culture works

THE SPOTLIGHT FELL on the Caribbean’s heritage and culture last week when regional politicians responsible for heritage and culture joined their Barbados counterpart and others with interest in the two areas, for a workshop in Barbados organised by the Organisation of American States (OAS).

The two-day event took place at Hilton Barbados, where Barbados’ Celia Toppin, a former deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Culture, now an OAS project manager (cultural heritage), was at the podium steering the programme.

Toppin is also co-ordinating the OAS Caribbean project.

Participants got a glimpse of Barbados’ heritage when it was showcased Thursday evening during a welcome cocktail reception at the Barbados Museum. They viewed an exhibition mounted in one of the Museum’s galleries that gave an insight into Barbados’ march to Independence, among other displays. (GC)
