HANG UP AND DRIVE – or pay a heavy price!
A change of law is coming to deal with persistent drivers who fiddle with their cellphones, tablets and other hand-held devices while on the road. And breaking the law could lead to a fine as high as $3 000, or more than a year in jail.
An amendment to the Road Traffic Act And Regulations is expected to go before Parliament in another eight weeks. Not only will it tackle the dangerously distracted drivers, but the inconsiderate ones who park in the spaces designated for the disabled.
For the first time, legislation that speaks specifically to the cellphone road nuisance and the indiscriminate use of disabled parking will come into force. (AC)
