ALMOST EVERYONE was watching Sada Williams and Matthew Clarke but little known Josh Newton stole the spotlight when the Athletics Association of Barbados’ May Classic climaxed at the National Stadium on Sunday.
Williams, in her debut season as a professional athlete, narrowly missed qualification for this summer IAAF World Championships in London while Clarke hit the qualifying mark for the Pan American Junior Games in Peru.
But Newton, a 12-year-old first former from Princess Margaret School had tongues wagging when he cleared 1.70 metres in the Under-18 boys’ high jump, won by Ryshon Williams (1.85). CARIFTA Games’ octathlon champion Aaron Worrell won the men’s section with a leap of 1.95 metres.
Newton, who is a member of the St Philip-based Proformers Track Club, will represent Barbados in the Under-13 division at next month’s NACAC Multi-Events Championships in Trinidad and Tobago. (EZS)
