BARBADIAN SURFER Josh Burke has advanced into the top 48 at the Ichinomiya 6000 event in Japan.

In the process, the 20-year-old eliminated world No. 17 Michael February of South Africa.

Burke started out strongly, posting a 7.03 on his first wave and backing it up with a 6.77 that moved him into second position behind Tomas Hermes of Brazil.

It left February requiring a 7.80 near excellent ride to bump Burke to third. However, Burke denied his opponent the opportunity by taking a wave with ten seconds to go, throwing an air reverse on a one-manoeuvre wave to post 6.37. (PR)
