BAR, BRA FACE-OFF

THE BARBADOS REVENUE AUTHORITY ACT may be challenged in the law courts if it isn’t repealed.

The Bar Association, at an extraordinary meeting of its membership last week, voted unanimously to challenge the constitutionality of the law because of problems which have arisen regarding the issuance of tax clearance certificates by the agency.

The certificates are intended to ensure tax compliance and increase revenue for the Government.

The Bar is asking Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler to repeal the act, and if no action comes by June 9, has pledged to take the matter to court. (BA)
