Draining tax

THE SUN MAY JUST be setting on the island’s green energy sector as the myriad of taxes announced in last month’s Budget look likely to wipe out the industry.

Two years ago, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced Government’s vision to have Barbados become a 100 per cent renewable energy island within 50 years.

However, several members at risk within the sector, along with the Barbados Renewable Energy Association (BREA), have expressed fears that the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), two per cent commission on foreign currency and the excise tax on fuel were all but a death knell for their businesses.

“The BREA would have spent some time earlier this year, on February 23 to be exact, in consultation around the national sustainable energy policy,” BREA’s executive director Meshia Clarke said as she spoke at a press conference held at the Central Bank yesterday. (AD)
