Sir George backs student fees

BARBADIANS SHOULD MAKE a financial contribution to their tertiary education at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

That’s the firm belief of Sir George Alleyne, UWI chancellor for the past 13-plus years but who is stepping down.

As Barbadian Sir George sees it, there is nothing wrong with the Government requiring students to contribute a fifth of the costs of their tuition. The Freundel Stuart administration recently introduced a fee-paying system at Cave Hill and other UWI campuses.

“To the extent that a tertiary education is both a public and a private good, to the extent that a private good is part of it, the individual should contribute to it,” he told the DAILY NATION. (TB)
