OAKHAM, England – Head coach Vasbert Drakes spoke to CWI Media after West Indies Women suffered a setback in their build-up to the ICC Women’s World Cup, when South Africa beat them by six wickets today here.

No batsman reached 20, as medium-fast bowler Masabata Klass grabbed four for 14 from 4.5 overs to undermine the Windies Women’s batting.

They were bowled out for 63 in 19 overs, after they chose to bat on a hard, true Lime Kilns Ground under mostly cloudy skies in their second official warm-up match.

The Caribbean women were without star batsman Stafanie Taylor for today’s contest, due to an ankle injury.

Veteran off-spinner Anisa Mohammed, leading the side in Taylor’s absence, snared two wickets for six runs from two overs, but the result was never in doubt.

An opening stand of 45 between Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee paved the way for the South Africans to coast to their target with 31 overs remaining, finishing on 65 for four.

The Windies Women have three days remaining before their opening World Cup match against current World champions Australia on Monday at the Somerset County Ground in Taunton.

Summarised scores:

West Indies Women 63 off 19 overs (Matabasa Klaas 4-14). South Africa Women 65 for four off 19 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 26; Anisa Mohammed 2-6). South Africa Women won by six wickets.  (PR)
